I bought this camcorder with two things on mind, semipro characteristics and HD video. and it's just what I get, but, in low light conditions (whyout the nigth vision) it makes and record some tinny little blue dots, but ony in the darkest plases ( but not in black obgets). other than that the camcorder works fine. by the way i call sony with this problem and they were trying to get me spend like $600 to "repair it"

A great camcorder for it's size, price and performance. Highly recommend it if you are on a tight budget, but need great quality. Over all I am satisfied with this product. Standard Definition Recording: videos shot in standard definition can be view very easily on a Mac. However, there seems to be a problem with the audio while the video is playing ( No audio ). Other software I found that works in terms of playing both the audio and video simultaneously are 1) VLC 2) iMovie '08 These two software seem to play and export the video and audio that can be edited in Final Cut Pro --------------------------------------------------------------------------- HD Recording : The Mac cannot recognize the HD format. Final Cut Pro surprisingly cannot recognize the HD format either. However, a great solution to this problem is to use the following software 1) VoltaicHD This will convert your HD video from your camera to a .MOV quick time file. You will not lose any video quality in the converting process. However, converting can take some time depending on the length of the footage. Once converted, you can edit in Final Cut Pro -------------------------------------------------------------------------- USB Connection: When connecting your USB cable from the camera to the computer is simple. Just connect it. No drivers or extra software is needed. USB connection to your camera is ready right out the box, and you can access all data stored on the camera ( photos, video's ) immediately --------------------------------------------------------------------------- My Computer Spec's: This review is based on two of my Mac ( Apple ) computers. 1) Mac book Pro Processor 1.83 GHz intel Core Duo Memory 2GB MHz DDR2 SDRAM Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.5 80GB primary drive 2) iMac Processor 2.8GHz intel Core Duo Memory 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Mac OS X Leopard Version 10.5.5 1TB primary drive

Hi IronMicey911. Thanks for taking the time to post. I just wanted to reach out so make sure folks knew that some tips & work arounds that are not officially supported by Sony could potentially void a warranty (so you will just want to be careful). I also wanted to share a link that has some tips on how to transfer your video using a Mac, what type of cameras are compatible and the connection needed. http://esupport.sony.com/perl/support-info.pl?&info_id=64. I hope this helps and again, thanks for posting.

Bought SR-10 first and it had great picture and easy to use cam ,but I didn't realize that it has no viewfinder on it, so I exchanged it with SR-11 and it was excellent for me,more megapixels,HD picture is awesome,it's like watching a blueray movie but it was me and my family on it,lightweight and great designed.Used it on my son's 6th B'day and when it's time to watch it,everybody was like, wow!!!Viewfinder is very useful,it can save battery life and easy to use in a bright sunny outdoors when the LCD is not clear.Highly recommended!!
Record stunning, incredibly detailed video footage in the clarity of 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution.
The advanced Sony BIONZ™ Image Processor uses hardware-based Large Scale Integrated (LSI) circuitry that improves camera response time, screens out noise before RAW data conversion, handles Dynamic Range Optimization processing, and prolongs battery life.
While recording video in High Definition you have the ability to capture still images directly to Memory Stick Duo™ media (sold separately).
Featuring Dolby® Ditigal 5.1 Creator, the built-in zoom microphone focuses audio recording on your subjects in sync with the camera’s zoom lens, helping memories ring true with clear dialogue and crisp, discrete sounds.
Images shot in the Tele Macro Mode help your subject stand out by properly focusing the subject while leaving the background unfocussed. The Tele Macro Mode is useful for shooting close-up shots, especially when you need to prevent the camcorder from casting a shadow on the subject.
Sony’s proprietary hot shoe makes it easy to use Intelligent Accessories, such as external lights and microphones, by providing power and on/off capability directly from the camcorder.
Unlike NiCad (Nickel Cadmium) batteries, Sony's rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries are not subjected to a life shortening "Memory Effect," so you’re free to charge the battery at any time. Additionally, Sony's exclusive AccuPower™ meter displays the battery time remaining in minutes, in either the viewfinder or on the LCD screen.
For added clarity and detail when taking pictures in low-light situations, the built-in flash improves pictures and reduces shadows.
Sony's newly designed CMOS image sensor delivers bright, vivid, and spectacularly detailed 5 megapixel (effective) video footage, as well as 10.2 megapixel still images -- all with prolonged battery life. Exmor™ technology captures images with high resolution and high sensitivity. In addition, the advanced Sony BIONZ™ image processor improves camera response time and screens out noise so the signal from each pixel is as pure as possible.
Hybrid recording technology delivers a new level of flexibility for transferring your video footage and digital photos from the camcorder to compatible viewing devices. Record to the camcorder’s internal hard disk drive, or choose instead to record to removable Memory Stick Duo™ media or Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media. You can even select from various dubbing functions to easily copy video or still images from the hard disk drive to Memory Stick media -- without using a PC. Images recorded or transferred to Memory Stick media can then be played directly on a PS3 or PC to share your memories with friends and family.
The 3.2" Wide1 (16:9) XtraFine™ LCD screen displays sharp, bright, photo-quality images, letting you compose and share video and still images more easily -- even outdoors. With nearly 1 megapixel (921K pixels) resolution and a wide viewing angle, the XtraFine LCD™ screen is like having a high-resolution video and photo viewer built into your camcorder.
Powered by the exclusive Sony’s BIONZ™ high-speed processing engine, D-Range Optimization preserves image data in bright highlights, such as suppressing “whiteout” in skies. When shooting in backlit settings, D-Range Optimization reveals more detail in shadows, preventing “blackout.” As a result, the captured image appears as natural as the original scene.
Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® T lenses use highly advanced optics to deliver vivid image brilliance, true-to-life color saturation, and perfect renditions of subtle tones. The additional T coating further reduces unwanted glare and flare for increased contrast and color.
The USB 2.0 interface6 provides an easy way to connect your camcorder to a PC for fast transfer of video and still images for editing.
At the touch of a button, battery information is displayed on the LCD screen when charging and when the camcorder is turned off. When using the LCD screen or viewfinder, the display will show how much the battery is charged -- in 10% increments -- and the recordable time left.
Search recorded content by shooting date to quickly and easily find a specific scene.
Made possible by the BIONZ™ image processing engine, Face Detection technology recognizes up to 8 faces anywhere in the frame and automatically controls focus, exposure, and color to help capture smiling faces brightly and clearly. Face Detection also helps make skin tones look natural without affecting other colors in the image.
Exmor™ technology captures video and still photo images with high resolution, high sensitivity, and exceptional detail. Advanced on-sensor A/D conversion yields rich tonal reproduction with high signal-to-noise ratio.
The optical zoom helps to bring the action close up from far away. In addition, Digital Zoom Interpolation means that extreme digital zooming is clearer, with less distortion than previous types of digital zoom.
Record in Dolby Digital 5.1ch surround sound with the camcorder’s built-in microphone. Recording in 5.1 channel surround sound allows you to experience your home movies with active sounds coming from all directions, so you can enjoy your personal home movies the way you experienced them while recording.
Record and play back both High Definition (HD)4 and Standard Definition (SD) video.
HDMI™ connectivity provides a simple, high-quality video and audio connection, with the ability to transmit HD video and 5.1 channel audio directly from the camcorder to compatible HDTVs via a single cable. With BRAVIA® Sync™ (CEC) technology, the HDMI connection also delivers the ability to control both the camcorder and HDTV using a single BRAVIA TV remote.
When using the Sony InfoLITHIUM® Battery, the Stamina® Battery Power Management System helps the camcorder prolong battery life for extra long continuous recording times from a single charge.7
Using a camcorder can be intimidating for some people. With a press of the Easy Handycam Button, most of the advanced features of the camcorder are "locked out," letting you focus only the buttons essential for recording.

Pros: Super good video/audio quality, easy to operate
Cons: None found so far
I had a Sony miniDV camcorder before, although it's still in good condition, I got this HDR-SR11. I shot several shows in a theatre. When I play it on my HDTV, all I can say is WOW! The video looks so good, and the audio is so clear, that it seems that the clips were shot by a professional. The video/audio quality is almost comparable with the HD programs from the satellite. I also tried the photo functionality, it's also very good, I was able to use the camcorder to take my daughter's passport picture, I also tried another photo camera at the same time, and the photo quality of the HDR-SR11 is much better. I use a HDMI cable to connect the camcorder with the HDTV. If you want to view the movie/photo on the computer, you can install the Picture Motion Browser software, once you installed it, it does not need a camcorder connected to the computer to play the files on your hard drive. You can do this: In Picture Motion Browser, choose Tools\Settings, then choose "Viewed folders", click "Add" to select the folder that contains the media files you want to view, then the folder will be added to the database, once it finishes analyzing the files, the media files can be played in the Picture Motion Browser. I am very satisfied with this camcorder, and would recommend it to anyone! For editing, Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c works very well with it.

Pros: Greta picture and useability
Cons: Screen useless outdoors, BE SURE camera is recording!!
Have had this camera since March '08. I shot trips to Italy and Jersey shore for a great, high resolution record of 2008. The viewfinder (vs screen) is an absolute must. Shot USAF Thunderbirds in AC; would have been impossible to see screen in bright sunlight. Using Vegas 8.0 Pro, with months of jerking around, am getting 48-52 minutes of 20MPBS on one DL DVD. Camera shoots at about 16MBPS, so I don't think I'm loosing much. I feel that 1920x1080 progressive will be out in the next few years, but I have played the above mentioned resolution on large TV's. I don't think the human eye cen detect much better than that. Once you use HD, and get used to the convenience of the hard drive, you'll never go back!!!! PS lost critical footage in Italy because of delay and sensitivity with record button, camera was on when off, etc.

Pros: Flexibility, quality, capability
Cons: Wide angle lens touted but not found in on-line catalog
This review is directed toward less experienced users - like me. I bought my SR11 about 9 months ago with lots of enthusiasm, expectations and ignorance. Moving from VHS tape to digital is a giant leap and going further to high definition is still another. I quickly learned that I was way outclassed by a camcorder that could do things I hadn't even imagined. But that wasn't bad; it made up for my inexperience and produced good results. First, this is a very versatile piece of equipment. It makes still pictures of better quality than any of the several still cameras I own. It has a powerful flash that reaches way out. The lens produces crisp images and the telephoto is phenomenal. It does its video imaging with the same kind of quality - but you would expect that of a HD camcorder. Shortly after I got it I handed it to someone else to capture my granddaughter's wedding. In this unplanned and somewhat difficult situation it produced great images and remarkable audio. It even made me look good. I don't have a clue how the audio zoom feature works, but it captured "I do" when barely murmured, and from about 15 feet away. Downloading the images was my first big challenge. My efforts produced unremarkable results. I then acquired Sony Movie Studio 9 and that problem melted away. I highly recommend it for almost any user. High definition images require different handling. My learning curve was made worse because I found it difficult to read the manual on the computer. After I printed out all 124 pages I began to learn. Some of my stills had remarkably wide format, almost like a wide-angle shot. In a way, it was. There is a difference in ratio between video and stills that takes only a single push of a button to resolve - but you do have to understand the need and know what to do. The manual is a great source of other tidbits of information that began to unfold. The printed manual has become a chairside reference and I have much yet to learn. The 60 gigabyte hard drive leaves you room for using the camera in extended shooting sessions, absolutely eclipsing the short bursts I used to use with VHS when I had to get it all on a 30 minute spool. It is a good idea to get a spare battery, altough I was pleasantly surprised at the endurance of the battery in exended use situations. It keeps you up to date with on-screen battery life in minutes. No surprises. The camera is well balanced and easy to operate. I have a partially paralyzed hand that makes using some cameras very difficult but I have found the SR11 very comfortable and secure. I'll leave it to more technically expert reviewers to go over the features but from the perspective of a rank amateur, I'm wild about this camera.

Pros: Breathtakingly beautiful videos, a technical masterpiece
Cons: Wind noise very noticeable. Needs a windsock.
I have had my hdr-sr11 for about 30 days. The Motion picture browser software has been heavily criticized in various reviews but I have found it very usable. I especially like the feature of only downloading videos and stills that have not been downloaded previously. I use it to download from my flash reader for my wifes digital camera as well. The video quality even viewed on my laptop computer is so outstanding that I am changing my approach to video making in order to search out more moments that warrant being captured so beautifully. I have had two Sony camcorders previously but this new HD technology coupled with the freedom of the hard drive storage makes my prior digital Sony totally obsolete.
