This is a fantastic TV for the money. It may even have superior color resolution than the newer XRR10 because of its uniqie red, green and blue LEDs across the whole back of the screen. Unlike many of its competitors, the Sony Bravia Engine 2 Pro upconvets all inputs to display them in 1080p. Also, unlike many new large-screen TVs with small down-firing speakers on the bottom, this one has great sound as a stand-alone set. Side speakers are ideal for this. Also, this TV has a fine built-in subwoofer hidden in the bottom of the TV, providing extraordinary bass for a TV set. I would challenge anyone to find better sound without the use of a separate surround sound system.

Of course I knew I was going to buy an XBR.This lcd by far has the best picture of all LCD's and gives all of the big name plasma's a true run for their money. The triluminos led backlight is unique to the XBR 8 thus far. Nothing has compared in color and black levels. Fairly pricey even as the XBR 9's and 10's are out. But they do not have the same backlight. EXCELLENT TV!

So many people complain about the non-removable side speakers. If you don't like them, or if the size of the TV is to wide, don't complain, just don't buy it! My older Sony is a 52" XBR4(excellent) that has speakers on the side and it has super audio. Large side speakers is the only way you're going to get good sound out of a flat-panel TV. The tiny speaker most manufactures put on the bottom just don't cut it, they don't have any bass. And who wants to turn on their 7.1 surround sound system just to watch the evening news, or a game show? If this TV will fits? Get it, just shop around for a good price!
Take the next step forward in HDTV technology with the KDL-46XBR8 BRAVIA® XBR® LCD flat panel HDTV. In addition to Full HD 1080p, this XBR-8 Series TV features TRILUMINOS® RGB Dynamic LED backlight which produces breathtaking images with enhanced color purity that result in deep blacks and bright whites with startling depth and exceptional shadow detail. You'll also see the difference with Motionflow™ 120Hz PRO technology which enhances motion and delivers a smoother and clearer picture. Your 1080p HD images will look more breathtaking than ever thanks to the BRAVIA Engine™ 2 PRO fully digital video processor. This XBR-8 Series TV has DMex™ functionality which lets you expand the capabilities of your HDTV by adding optional BRAVIA® Link modules (sold separately), plus it comes with plenty of connectivity options to connect your video sources.
16:9 Full HD 1080p resolution panel (1920 x 1080) accepts any HDTV signal and renders it with optimum resolution.
Motionflow™ 120Hz PRO technology couples a high 120Hz frame rate with sequential scanning technology, which controls the backlight to horizontally divide frames and reduce visual flickering. The combination of high frame rate and sequential scanning significantly reduces source image blur and judder in film sources, HD content, broadcast movies, and primetime programming, and helps create smoother, more fluid motion for a natural and realistic viewing experience.
x.v.Color™ technology2 adopts the x.v.YCC international color standard to display nearly twice as many (1.8x) viewable colors than the existing RGB color standard.
DMex™ functionality expands your HDTV’s capabilities by letting you connect optional BRAVIA® Link modules, including the BRAVIA Internet Video Link, BRAVIA DVD Link, BRAVIA Wireless Link, and BRAVIA Input Link (all sold separately)3.
DLNA® (Digital Living Network Alliance) compliance allows BRAVIA® XBR®8-Series HDTVs to access digital photos from DLNA-enabled PCs and other devices4.
Sony® has integrated the TV Guide® Interactive Program Guide into the exclusive Xross Media Bar™ user interface to deliver regularly updated program listings.
BRAVIA Engine™ 2 PRO is Sony’s most advanced video processing system, utilizing the latest generation of Digital Reality Creation technology to render a supremely sharp, crystal clear image from any video resolution.
Live Color Creation™ technology utilizes special processing to refine colors and deliver a more realistic picture.
24p True Cinema™ mode enables you to enjoy films at their intended 24 fps (frames per second) when viewed using a 24p capable output device, such as a Blu-ray Disc™ player.
BRAVIA® Sync capability allows you to control CEC-enabled components connected via HDMI™ input. Use your BRAVIA® HDTV remote control to play Blu-ray Disc™ or DVD movies, access home theater settings, and even operate compatible Handycam® camcorders with a convenient on-screen display6.
Xross Media Bar™ (XMB™) makes it simple and intuitive to navigate the television's menus, controls, and user settings.
BRAVIA® XBR®8-Series LCD HDTVs offers four HDMI™ inputs (up to 1080/60p capable) that transmit uncompressed digital video and multi-channel audio over one cable, as well as two HD component connections (1080/60p capable), giving you the flexibility you need to connect the latest video sources.
VESA® compatible hole spacing uses an industry-standard mounting hole pattern that can be used with VESA-compliant mounting brackets, taking the guesswork out of selecting the proper hardware for hanging your TV on the wall.
TRILUMINOS® RGB LED backlight technology aligns individual clusters of red, green, and blue LEDs to produce a significantly higher purity of primary colors than single white LED backlights, resulting in more accurate color reproduction. This clustered arrangement also allows the XBR®8 to adjust the brightness of the backlight in units of small blocks, so it can display deep blacks in one portion of the screen and bright whites in another, producing images with enhanced depth, three-dimensionality and exceptionally accurate shadow detail. And, because it uses LEDs rather than the fluorescent tubes found in many HDTVs, the TRILUMINOS® RGB Dynamic LED backlight also promises exceptionally long life.
The BRAVIA® XBR®8-Series HDTV combines a 10-bit processor and 10-bit panel to create and display billions of colors. Using both a 10-bit processor and 10-bit panel allows for 64 times the level of color expression in 8-bit panels, resulting in smoother color transitions and helping to avoid giving the picture a “paint-by-numbers” look.
Dynamic Video Noise Reduction adaptive technology analyzes the motion, sharpness, and brightness of each scene in real time to identify various types of noise and reduce unwanted artifacts without compromising the video signal.
The DIGITAL MEDIA PORT connection allows the use of an optional DIGITAL MEDIA PORT cradle to connect digital devices directly to your BRAVIA® HDTV.
Bring your photos to life and enjoy highly detailed, Full HD 1920x1080p images with the PhotoTV HD5 mode. PhotoTV HD fine tunes settings on your BRAVIA® XBR®8-Series HDTV, such as sharpness, gradation, and color to display images that more closely match the look of printed photographs.
Favorites and Photo Slideshow functions feature rich 3D graphics that make it easy and fun to quickly access video content and digital photos to share with family and friends.
RS-232C connectivity enables you to operate your BRAVIA® HDTV using home control and automation systems.

Pros: does rich blacks, games n blu-ray on ps3 are breathtaking, hd dvd movies and games produced from xbox360
Cons: $$$ and they should have included those free net widgets
I know the color contrast ratio is only 1million:1, but the blacks are pretty rich. I enjoy watchin this t.v in both hd and sd. I used cnets settings and three months into owning the TV it looks even better (I guess the break in period isnt a myth). Overall, you wont be disapointed in buying 1 (thanks babe!) If you like HD sports (I watch nfl network replays because of the picture quality), movies (dr manhattan looks like im looking at him through a window), and games (fight night round 4 looks spectaculor on this set) this unit is for you. Lastly I have a surround system but standard speakers work well too, although they arent removable. But i tell everyone who is interested in getting this unit, to get a ps3, hd reciever, ultra high speed hdmi cables, and a decent 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system and you'll be set! Im telling you the truth you'll start renting blu-rays and buying ps3 games immediately. It's that spectacular of a set!!!!

Pros: Spectacular features
Cons: Price is much too high and speakers can't be removed
I was so excited when I first heard about this model, but when I discovered that the speakers were on the sides of the unit and unremovable, I realized that it just won't fit in my room. The overall width of this unit is more like a 50" TV than a 46" TV. In addition, I think that most individuals who are in the market for a high cost TV like this one, already have a surround sound system, or will purchase one to suit, thus there is no need for the built-in speakers. I think the SONY designers messed up again. I hope they'll come up with a new design soon that allows for the removal of side speakers and a big reduction in price.

Pros: Excellent contrast ratio, superior color, matte screen finish, great motion enhancement
Cons: Non-removable speakers, price, modules needed to add functionality
I've been waiting a long time to buy a new TV set and chose this set over another brand's recently released flagship LCD. Principle reasons were: 1) Best contrast ratio - much like a plasma because of the localized LED back-lighting. I compared this set side by side to several plasmas in a darkened room and it was as good if not better than most plasmas. 2) Superior color - including expanded color depth and spectrum 3) Matte finish on the screen (versus glossy) 4) Motion enhancement for sports 5) I'm familiar with the crossbar menu system because I own a PS3 I've had it for about two weeks and am very impressed with the picture. Areas for improvement: 1) Speakers are on the side and can't be removed. If I'm paying this high of a price for a set it's likely that I have a sound system that I'm using instead of the speakers on the set. If I could remove them, I might have bought the 55" set. This is why I gave it 4 starts for design. 2) Amazingly high price. I think this will scare lots of folks away. 3) I think that the ability to connect to internet content should be included on a set that's retailing for this price and shouldn't be in an add-on expansion module. Maybe they should be giving away a single module of choice for early buyers of the sets. I gave it 3 stars for value because of the above two reasons.
