I have to admit, this was probably one of my most satisfying tv purchase...I've personally went through 5 tvs in the last 1.5 years and I must say that I have been very please with the triluminous technology led. This tv does have the deepest black over any others that I've seen including many other competitors as well as sony's line up. I think picture quality is the most important factor when buying a TV and this XBR8 has it!

I was not considering this TV because of price until I found a closeout deal that fit my budget. Had the TV for 2 months and am exceptional pleased. The sound is not separate system quality but better than most TVs. The most important feature, picture quality, is unsurpassed. I lucked out.

Take the next step forward in HDTV technology with the KDL-55XBR8 BRAVIA® XBR® LCD flat panel HDTV. In addition to Full HD 1080p, this XBR-8 Series TV features TRILUMINOS® RGB Dynamic LED backlight which produces breathtaking images with enhanced color purity that result in deep blacks and bright whites with startling depth and exceptional shadow detail. You'll also see the difference with Motionflow™ 120Hz PRO technology which enhances motion and delivers a smoother and clearer picture. Your 1080p HD images will look more breathtaking than ever thanks to the BRAVIA Engine™ 2 PRO fully digital video processor. This XBR-8 Series TV has DMex™ functionality which lets you expand the capabilities of your HDTV by adding optional BRAVIA® Link modules (sold separately), plus it comes with plenty of connectivity options to connect your video sources.
16:9 Full HD 1080p resolution panel (1920 x 1080) accepts any HDTV signal and renders it with optimum resolution.
Motionflow™ 120Hz PRO technology couples a high 120Hz frame rate with sequential scanning technology, which controls the backlight to horizontally divide frames and reduce visual flickering. The combination of high frame rate and sequential scanning significantly reduces source image blur and judder in film sources, HD content, broadcast movies, and primetime programming, and helps create smoother, more fluid motion for a natural and realistic viewing experience.
x.v.Color™ technology2 adopts the x.v.YCC international color standard to display nearly twice as many (1.8x) viewable colors than the existing RGB color standard.
DMex™ functionality expands your HDTV’s capabilities by letting you connect optional BRAVIA® Link modules, including the BRAVIA Internet Video Link, BRAVIA DVD Link, BRAVIA Wireless Link, and BRAVIA Input Link (all sold separately)3.
DLNA® (Digital Living Network Alliance) compliance allows BRAVIA® XBR®8-Series HDTVs to access digital photos from DLNA-enabled PCs and other devices4.
Sony® has integrated the TV Guide® Interactive Program Guide into the exclusive Xross Media Bar™ user interface to deliver regularly updated program listings.
BRAVIA Engine™ 2 PRO is Sony’s most advanced video processing system, utilizing the latest generation of Digital Reality Creation technology to render a supremely sharp, crystal clear image from any video resolution.
Live Color Creation™ technology utilizes special processing to refine colors and deliver a more realistic picture.
24p True Cinema™ mode enables you to enjoy films at their intended 24 fps (frames per second) when viewed using a 24p capable output device, such as a Blu-ray Disc™ player.
BRAVIA® Sync capability allows you to control CEC-enabled components connected via HDMI™ input. Use your BRAVIA® HDTV remote control to play Blu-ray Disc™ or DVD movies, access home theater settings, and even operate compatible Handycam® camcorders with a convenient on-screen display6.
Xross Media Bar™ (XMB™) makes it simple and intuitive to navigate the television's menus, controls, and user settings.
BRAVIA® XBR®8-Series LCD HDTVs offers four HDMI™ inputs (up to 1080/60p capable) that transmit uncompressed digital video and multi-channel audio over one cable, as well as two HD component connections (1080/60p capable), giving you the flexibility you need to connect the latest video sources.
VESA® compatible hole spacing uses an industry-standard mounting hole pattern that can be used with VESA-compliant mounting brackets, taking the guesswork out of selecting the proper hardware for hanging your TV on the wall.
TRILUMINOS® RGB LED backlight technology aligns individual clusters of red, green, and blue LEDs to produce a significantly higher purity of primary colors than single white LED backlights, resulting in more accurate color reproduction. This clustered arrangement also allows the XBR®8 to adjust the brightness of the backlight in units of small blocks, so it can display deep blacks in one portion of the screen and bright whites in another, producing images with enhanced depth, three-dimensionality and exceptionally accurate shadow detail. And, because it uses LEDs rather than the fluorescent tubes found in many HDTVs, the TRILUMINOS® RGB Dynamic LED backlight also promises exceptionally long life.
The BRAVIA® XBR®8-Series HDTV combines a 10-bit processor and 10-bit panel to create and display billions of colors. Using both a 10-bit processor and 10-bit panel allows for 64 times the level of color expression in 8-bit panels, resulting in smoother color transitions and helping to avoid giving the picture a “paint-by-numbers” look.
Dynamic Video Noise Reduction adaptive technology analyzes the motion, sharpness, and brightness of each scene in real time to identify various types of noise and reduce unwanted artifacts without compromising the video signal.
The DIGITAL MEDIA PORT connection allows the use of an optional DIGITAL MEDIA PORT cradle to connect digital devices directly to your BRAVIA® HDTV.
Bring your photos to life and enjoy highly detailed, Full HD 1920x1080p images with the PhotoTV HD5 mode. PhotoTV HD fine tunes settings on your BRAVIA® XBR®8-Series HDTV, such as sharpness, gradation, and color to display images that more closely match the look of printed photographs.
Favorites and Photo Slideshow functions feature rich 3D graphics that make it easy and fun to quickly access video content and digital photos to share with family and friends.
RS-232C connectivity enables you to operate your BRAVIA® HDTV using home control and automation systems.

Pros: Picture quality, Sony whiz-bang features and sound.
Cons: Cabinet depth and internet/multimedia connectivity.
I have been considering this TV since it was introduced in 2008, but couldn't justify the price premium until it started to come down. I have exhaustively compared each competitor/segment using industry reviews and in-person demos, and kept coming back to the XBR8 each time. First, the good. The picture is amazing! Take a few minutes to fine tune basic picture adjustments and you will be rewarded with excellent blacks and realistic color rendition. The menu navigation is fairly intuitive and selecting inputs and making adjustments is much quicker than older Sony televisions. The picture quality is only as good as the source signal so beware of viewing non-HD programing on a larger screen (yikes!). Blu-ray and HD content is out of this world. The sound is surprisingly good from such slim speakers, a nice surprise. The viewing angle was also better than expected when sitting off to the side. Other reviews I've read suggested the picture quality suffered but I can't really tell much of a difference. It also does not generate a significant amount of heat, which I suppose is attributed to the LED backlight. Now, the bad. Even with the price reduction it is still a bit steep, but I don't think you will second guess the decision given all of the positive features. The cabinet depth is also not very slim compared to other brands of this size. When mounted to the wall with a pivot/extension mount, it protrudes from the wall 11 inches (min.). Also, for a "flagship" model the internet and multimedia/DLNA connectivity is disappointing. You are forced to buy an additional add-on module ($199) for a basic experience, even though the new XBR9 comes with a significant amount of internet features std. that are integrated into a lower priced television. I hope a firmware upgrade can be made available to resolve this issue for XBR8 owners. Overall, this is an excellent television that I would highly recommend to any person looking for a top-notch viewing experience.

Cons: 0
This TV was put in a wall that has windows facing it that look out over a lake. The glare is terrible and makes it impossible to see the TV during the day. Then I purchased a Sony 55XBR8 and it is so impressive that ll my neighbors want to come over now to watch it!

I have been shopping for televisions for the last three months. I had considered the 52XBR6, and then this one. I was very indecisive about spending this amount of money in this TV, until I tested it at a local store. After making up my mind, I ended up buying the 55XBR8. Our daily viewing patterns include mostly Blue-Ray movies and HD definition channels. My previous purchase was a year ago and was the 46W3000, which now I placed in my bedroom. During the dismounting and mounting process I was able to compare both televisions side-by-side with Blue-Ray content at the same settings. With the LED technology, you do not get the Glowing blacks you get with the regular non-LED LCD TVs. Actually; I did not realize how awful this effect is until I compared both televisions side-by-side. Even when you want to change the Input select, the bottoms are invisible, until you touch the bottom right corner and the bottoms show up. This is one of the coolest features and my daughter loves it. Some people have complained about three things: Price: If you make your research, you can get a good deal these days. However, keep in mind, that THIS IS THE BEST LED LCD out there at the moment of the review, and is all WORTHY. The glowing Sony logo at the bottom: You can turn this off; however, this is not distracting at all, and looks sharp. The floating speakers: They are very thin. On the other side, I believe it adds value because at this price, you do not want the TV to look like every other TV out there. I am not planning to change TV sets in many, many years. This is the best LCD Ever!!!
