I've had this product for 3-6 months
Pros: HDMI 1080p, 7.1, works out of box
Cons: no standby mode from unit, no upconvert
I upgraded from the DE series as I wanted HDMI passthrough support. I got a great open box deal on this and am very happy with it. Only problem is that it doesn't office upconvert as the DE series did, not even to component level output.

I've had this product for 1-3 months
Pros: Decodes the latest audio formats...DTS-HD MA etc...
Cons: cross media bar; no THX
I may be expecting too much for my dollar, but this is actually a bargain deal. I am so excited with the many features it has compared to other brands. This is a great start for those who are new to home theater.

Pros: Lots of features for the price; works well with other Sony Equipment
Cons: I'd prefer a more detailed manual; no way to put in standby mode w/o remote
Feature set, specifications and sound quality are excellent for the price; fit and finish is very good. I have this mated with a Sony HDTV and Sony BDS-350 blue ray player; they naturally all handshake well with one another. I have very few dislikes. I prefer a more detailed manual that better explains many of the more unique audio features. This unit wants to stay in stand-by mode which cannot be accessed via the unit physically. The front switch either turns it full on or full-off....a remote is needed to turn it to stand-by. Staying in stand-by allows all the HDMI inter-connectivity options to remain functional which I rely on....I would like there to be a manual way to temporarily over-ride the HDMI settings so if on the rare occasion I want to use the receiver to simply listen to music, I could do that without the TV wanting to also be on...I can adjust the HDMI settings to avoid that but the vast majority of time I do want the TV to turn on when the A/V amp is on ....I would like an esay temporary over-ride capability. One note of caution: make sure you set up the Sony BDS-350 to send "direct" audio to the amp to ensure you actually get DTS master audio 7.1 and Dolby True Audio 7.1 decoding by the receiver. The player defaults to a mixed format that sends LPCM digital data and in some cases this will not give you full discrete 7.1 level signals.

Pros: Sound, 7 and 1 on Blu-Ray Disc was wild
Cons: Nothing yet, had it two weeks
"I also own the STR-DG720, I went to the 820 for the little extras this unit has like the extra HDMI. It has more then little extras, the sound is great. One thing read the Operating Instructions, to set it up right. For the price it cost other units don't come close, One thing buy good speakers and your sound will be great. I had no problem with the 720 I been using for the last 5 months. That is the main reason I bought the 820 and it was worth it.."

Pros: Affordable, Expandable and above all...it's a Sony
I just bought a brand new Blu-Ray Player (Sony BDP-S550) and a new HDTV Projector and this Sony receiver is the perfect match. It decodes all of the newest Blu-Ray audio tracks, has an input for my iPod (through a DMP attachment puchased separately) and has a backlit remote for use in the dark. All at an affordable price. What's not to love?

Pros: Don't know won't do anything
Cons: Right out of the box it won't work
This is a brand new receiver right out of the box and it doesn't work at all. The Sony online tech rep confirmed it was busted. I bought it in the US, it and I now live in the Republic of Panama so the warranty is kaput here. Took it to the very large Sony repair center here. The ordered a part from the US. Three weeks later it was ready. Took it home, same problem. Turn on the power, no display and a few clicks and zip else. As far as I am concerned this is a giant piece of junk and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. I will never buy another Sony product. Think I'll buy a Yamaha to replace this.

I've had this product for less than a month
Pros: Essy basic set-up, 4 HDMI inputs
Cons: Manual, remote
With a Roku, PS3, Blu-Ray and DVR needed four HDMI inputs - this seemed to be the most reasonable. Easy initial set-up, very good sound. Remote is not too intuitive, hard to program for other TVs. The manual and custom set up/display features just suck - counter intuitive, and one of the worst manuals every - surprising for SONY. Still haven't quite figured out how to boost surround rear surround speakers only. Also, although you can use your home theater speakers or go through your TV speakers, unit must be on for both.

Pros: Money value, Sound performance. Ease of use
Cons: Bulky remote. No blue light to indicate digital signal
Well worth the money. Not a complicated receiver. Very easy to set-up and use. Makes the new high end audio sound outstanding. Highly recommend this unit. More bang for the buck with this one.
