Pros: Looks nice and beefy
Cons: Everything else
It is slow in every way, like powering on, loading, responding and for the money it is a waste. Sony makes many many more perfect blu-rays so just don't buy this one.

Pros: Solid build and quality & playability (with firmware updts)
Cons: outdated technology, slow; long remote
After 1 year of use, I believe the S1 is an excellent player with solid build, but with some clear limitations. It is a first generation blu-ray player (Profile 1.0) meaning it decodes the blu-ray discs, but it cannot take advantage of BonusView (Profile 1.1 & 2.0) and BD-Live (Profile 2.0) features found on many of today's BDs. With firmware updates it can handle the latest discs well and it even speeds up the startup and handling procedures. It's great that it plays my AVCHD encoded DVDs from my HD camcorder. I even get 5.1 surround sound out of it. Overall, I'm pleased with the S1, but would go for a newer model with the newer Profile 2.0 capabilities. Oh, and the remote is extremely long making it a bit tough to use.

Pros: Plays blu-ray.
Cons: buggy, frustrating annoying, slow.
I read that it was slow. That's OK. But Buggy! If you press a key out of order it just locks up. Sometimes not even power-off works. I have to pull the plug to get it to reboot. Play backwards doesn't work at all. You never know what to push. For instance to play Tropic Thunder, PLAT doesn't make it play. Nor does SELECT. I had to go to SCENE SELECT and select the first scene to get past the primary menu.
