HAD a beautiful picture but lasted a year Then wouldnt read disc a common problem with the Sony Blu-Ray players

Pros: It works better at a patience trainer than a AV device.
Cons: It is excruciatingly slow at doing anything.
This is absolutely the worst Sony product I have ever owned. I have a 55" Sony LCD, a 34" Sony Flat CRT, Three high-end Sony Receivers, a Sony 400 DVD Changer, multiple high-end Sony digital cameras, and have been pleased with all of them, until I bought this BluRay Player from Sony. As a result of this experience, I'm not sure I will ever buy another Sony product again. Ever. With that said, I have had to do multiple firmware updates just to play certain mainstream movies. Sometimes brand new movies with no scratches take multiple power-down/power-up cycles to play. Then we get to the really frustrating part; the seemingly 10 minute warm-up period after you push the power button before you can insert or remove a DVD. We have family joke about this player - we say stuff like, want to watch a movie. Ok, turn it on, and I'll go wash the car. It is nearly that bad.

Pros: Gives you the Blu-Ray experience at a good price point. Frequent updates to firmware keeping the product current.
Cons: Slow load times. No support for Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio. No BDLive.

If you have the latest firmware update installed (it sounds like the other reviewers do NOT) then load times are really quite reasonable. Turn on time to watching a movie is usually less than 3 minutes, even on menu-heavy movies or new movies such as the Pirates movies or Dark Knight. I think this time is entirely reasonable when you take in to account new technology and that the 3 minute wait time has little to no impact on the amount of time you're setting aside to watch a movie anyways. Great product, especially if you can find one at a reasonable price ($200 or less now I would imagine should be reasonable). Not for the audiophile who needs every 7.1 audio codec out there. The video improvement over broadcast (especially cable) HD quality is obvious and significant!

Sony® created BRAVIA® Theatre Sync™ technology to go beyond basic digital audio and video transmission. Based on the HDMI-CEC function, the BRAVIA® Theatre Sync™ feature will be included on select BRAVIA® Theatre home A/V systems and components. This useful function reduces the hassle and time consuming job of powering up, routing signals, etc. to the simple push of one button.3 Want to play your Blu-ray Disc Player on your Sony® A/V system– Easy, just push PLAY on the BRAVIA® HDTV remote and everything is taken care of for you. Even when the system is off! Want to power down everything once you've finished enjoying it– Push one button and the TV and A/V system powers down. BRAVIA® Theatre Sync™ helps make things a whole lot easier to operate.
Blu-ray Disc technology is compatible with many different types of video codec for recording your favorite films onto the disc. So regardless of the High Definition recording process used by the studio making the movie, Sony's Blu-ray Disc Players are ready for them all, in glorious Full 1080p HD.1
Dolby Digital Plus is Dolby's next-generation audio technology that can offer up to 7.1 channels of surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also offers a higher-quality experience than the Dolby Digital soundtrack you are used to on a standard DVD.
Get the most out of your existing DVD collection by having them upscaled to 1080p quality. Your DVD's will look and sound better than ever when you play them back on your new Sony Blu-ray Disc Player.
Most of all Hollywood movies are shot at 24 frames per second, and Blu-ray Disc movies are mastered at 24 frame per second, so it is only fitting that the Sony BDP-S300 can output your films at 1080/24p for a true film-like experience at home. Of course, The Sony BDP-S300 can also output at 1080/60p for more traditional HDTV sets on the market. Either way Sony has you covered for the best picture possible in Full 1080p!
Blu-ray Disc technology not only delivers a phenomenal picture, but incredible sound as well. Many Blu-ray Disc movies take advantage of the capacity on the disc to offer an Uncompressed Multi Channel Linear PCM soundtrack of your favorite movies. With up to 7.1 channels of surround sound, Uncompressed Multi Channel Linear PCM is completely lossless and lets you hear the movie with incredible clarity and realism that you never experience before on DVD.

Pros: Image and sound quality are impeccable
Cons: Slow to start; unreliable.
Extremely slow to boot up, recognize discs, and load whatever data it needs to provide the Blu-Ray enhanced experience. It takes so long that sometimes you wonder whether it even received your command. It doesn't play some discs unless you find a work-around (e.g. play from the chapters, etc.). If you get it working, the sound and image quality are terrific! Sony's product developers and executives on this project should be embarrassed. Sorry.

Pros: Great picture
Cons: Slow funtion
If you can get past the fact that it takes forever for a movie to load or for a function request to happen, you will be into Blu-Ray. The picture quality is great, but it is nothing like conventional DVD when it comes to speed in getting the player to accutually start playing!! When you hit the power button you wait and like a minute later the power comes on. You hit the eject button and you wait the same amount of time before the disc tray opens. None of the buttons other than the chapter skip buttons do anything. In the middle of the movie if you want to go to the main menu, forget it. It gets lost in its own thinking and locks up. The difference in 1080i from Direct TV and 1080p from Blu-ray is virtually nothing to the eye. The long wait to get the movie to play is not worth the picture.
