Dolby® TrueHD internal decoding and bitstream output via HDMI™ for the Dolby TrueHD and dts®-HD (Master Audio and High Resolution Audio) codes delivers studio quality audio designed specifically for high definition entertainment like Blu-ray Disc™ movies, with up to 7.1 channels of surround sound that is virtually indistinguishable from the original studio version.
BD-Live2 technology allows you to download and stream bonus content such as additional scenes, shorts, trailers, movie-based games, and more.
BRAVIA® Sync for Theatre5 technology utilizes the industry-standard HDMI™ CEC function to provide one button access and control of the appropriate inputs for your BRAVIA HDTV and HDMI-connected A/V components.
Support for the international xvYCC color standard produces images with 1.8x the color space of the traditional RGB color standard, resulting in images with more natural and vivid color reproduction6.
USB Port lets you connect the included 1GB USB flash-based memory for BD-Live External Memory2.
7.1 channel analog output provides connectivity to older receivers, making the player compatible with your existing audio system with 7.1 analog inputs.
Ethernet port provides connectivity to a home network with broadband connection so you can download network updates and bonus content2.

BD/DVD/CD and AVCHD playback plays your favorite Blu-ray Disc™ movies, DVDs, audio CDs, and AVCHD-format discs on your Sony Blu-ray Disc player3.
xross media bar™ (XMB™) on-screen display is a fast, fun and easy way to access set-up menus, user controls, and more.
DVD Upscaling via HDMI™ gets the most out of your existing DVD collection by upscaling standard definition video to near HD 1080p resolution1.
Slim chassis with a gloss black finish fits elegantly with your home theater system and décor, and the included backlit remote helps give you total control of the movie-watching experience.
Bonus View feature provides “picture-in-picture” capability with select Blu-ray Disc™ titles.
Precision Cinema HD Upscale circuitry uses high bandwidth digital-to-analog conversion and processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. Additionally, separate algorithms are used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharper backgrounds with moving objects that are nearly free from motion artifacts.
Precision Drive system for BD allows you to play back some Blu-ray Disc™ media or DVDs that may have been damaged or warped -- with minimal degradation of picture quality2.

Pros: Looks good; reasonable image
Cons: Poor reliability
Product worked well for about six months. Started to have problems w/ Blu Ray discs and was told we needed to update the firmware. By the second udpate, after 11 months of ownership, Blu Ray discs stopped working altogether. At month 13, no discs whatsoever will play. Unfortunately, I failed to recognize the timeline as this was evolving so I now have a useless device that's out of warranty and headed for the trash... Extremely disappointing.

I've had this product for less than a month
Pros: Sharp picture, load time not too bad.
Cons: Doesn't start where you leave off, no frame-advance/slo-mo.
Performs all the basic stuff a Blu-ray DVD player should perform. My only two gripes with it is that unlike my Sony standard DVD player it doesn't always resume where you leave off if you hit the "Stop" button. Plus, also unlike my standard Sony DVD player, there is no frame-advance or slo-mo.

Pros: "Picture Quality, and Ease of Interface"
Cons: waiting so long to buy one!
This Blue Ray player does everything I want it to and more. The user interface is the same as my Sony LCD TV and they work like a charm together with a Monster HDMI cable. There was a software update and I burnt the image file from sony on a disc and it upgraded exactly as they said it would on the update website. You can also connect a CAT5 and update that way if you like. Standard DVD quality is so much better, and the Blue Ray disc's are to die for! Forget the upconverter's and make the investment!

Pros: It does what it is supposed to do. Very nice display
Cons: Don't be so picky. It loads fast enough
I was told that this player takes too long to load. I find that it takes a little while, but it has much more to load than a regular DVD player. It isn't a problem. This player has very nice playback and a good price. I have the Costco version of this player and am very pleased with it

Pros: Play back is great!!
Cons: you can't restart from where you left off if you turn off the machine, change a setting or open the DVD tray.
You would think an advanced Blu-ray player would resume where you left off if you turn off the player and turn it back on later. The most basic DVD players do this. They even remember the DVD you watched previously from where you left off. Sony fix this and you'll have a great machine. Also, audio factory default is not Dolby 5.1, you have to go to the settings menu and change from basic stereo output. Play back picture quality is excellent, it's shame that such basic requirements were neglected. Bad job Sony!!
