I've owned and enjoyed using my A700 since the day they were released, and kept telling myself there was no need to change. Then, I had the opportunity to handle and play with an A900, and "POW!" that was it. The viewfinder! What an utter delight. The styling, while not one of my top five reasons for making this purchase carries me back to my beloved Minoltas of days gone by. Features and option controls, I don't know where to start; controls that my fingers simply fall into place on. The logical control layout is a subject of its own. Today was my first field use at a water polo tournament, and all the surprises were pleasant. I used it with the vertical grip which I also had on my A700. I was able to get each shot I wanted, using the 24-70Z or 135 f1.8Z. In all a sign of much great shooting yet to be done! Thank you Sony.

Sony is very smart building a camera for the photographer and not the videographer. They should keep working on improving things like ISO noise reduction, Frames per second, adding more lenses and mirror lock-up. Basic things that a photographer needs for taking a STILL PHOTOGRAPH. Leave all of the live view, video etc. to the amateur cameras. The viewfinder is beautiful (due to no live view and video). Menus are simple to use. Now that they are bringing prices down, it is great to be a full frame photographer again. Maybe the next model will be even lower . Hint Hint. Overall the camera is excellent. Keep 'em coming Sony!

I took a jump from the a350 (I bought the 350 only 9 months ago as a bump up from a canon reb xti, the 900 wasn't out yet, if it had been I would not have bought the 350) The a900 is probably the most technologically advanced camera out there right now. If you include the advanced DRO there are MORE THAN 50 CONTRAST SETTINGS!! This camera doesnt just take pictures, it makes art! And with the preview one can adjust a shot perfectly, making a single shot look as though it was manipulated into an HDR. I truly dont think there is a better camera on the market today, as I probably would have paid twice as much as retail. I take nature shots for an internationally known firm, using 3 different cameras for different types of shots, with this camera I will never have to switch cameras again
The new standard in digital photography has arrived with the Sony α DSLR-A900. Packed with features, this flagship DSLR is the first α to incorporate a 35mm full frame image sensor and 24.6-megapixel resolution. It also incorporates the world's first body-integrated, full-size SteadyShot INSIDE™ image stabilization technology. You'll also experience a larger capture area, improved wide-angle performance and tighter depth of field control with the new full frame Exmor™ CMOS image sensor. Equipped with Dual BIONZ™ imaging processors, the α900 delivers continuous shooting up to 5 fps with superb image quality and ultra-low noise. The α900 also offers a large, ultra-bright glass pentaprism viewfinder with 100 percent coverage, a 3.0-inch Xtra Fine LCD™ display and HDMI™ output with PhotoTV HD compatibility. The DSLR-A900 is a camera body only and does not include a lens.
Note: Sony α (alpha) lenses with the Digital Technology (DT) designation are not recommended for use with DSLR-A900. Although DT lenses can be used with α900, they can only realize a maximum of 11MP image size, and are not guaranteed to provide accurate Auto Exposure performance.
The A900 features a 35mm full frame Exmor™ CMOS image sensor that is approximately 2.35x larger than the APS-C sized sensors found in many DSLR cameras. The result is a larger capture area, improved wide angle performance, and tighter depth of field control. In addition, its 24.6MP resolution maximizes the resolving power of your existing lenses and delivers sharper, higher contrast photos.
A large, ultra bright glass pentaprism viewfinder provides you with amazing clarity and high optical performance for tighter focus control. In addition, it offers viewfinder magnification of 0.74x, allowing you to see an image nearer to its actual size, as well as 100% field coverage for detailed framing work.
The A900 provides direct HDMI™ output to your BRAVIA® HDTV and other compatible HDTV screens, so you can view and share photos in breathtaking clarity and detail3. Additionally, PhotoTV HD capable BRAVIA® HDTVs will automatically optimize display settings, such as sharpness, gradation, and color to display your images in a way that more closely matches the natural look of printed photographs3.
The body of the A900 is entirely covered in a die-cast magnesium alloy shell, providing a rugged feel and surprisingly lightweight.
A supplied InfoLITHIUM® lithium-ion battery provides long-lasting performance, allowing you to capture approximately 880 images on a single charge7.
A 40-segment multi-pattern metering system provides superior exposure control accuracy in a wide range of lighting conditions.
In addition to digitizing analog signals, the full frame Exmor™ CMOS image sensor also performs both analog and digital noise reduction. This on-chip dual noise reduction process aids in the high speed transfer of noiseless digital signals.
In addition to full frame image capture, the A900 can also crop images to the APS-C size format, allowing the use of lenses designed specifically for APS-C sized image sensors5.
AF Micro Adjustment allows you to fine tune focus for various lenses6. The A900 can store adjusted focus values for up to thirty lenses.
The A900 allows you to bracket up to three exposures in 2.0EV-step increments.
Remote Camera Control allows you to control your A900 from your PC.
The A900 harnesses the power of Dual BIONZ™ image processing engines to deliver true-to-life images with ultra-low noise and continuous shooting at up to 5 fps.
Review your images in stunning detail on the 3.0” Xtra Fine LCD™2 display (921k pixels). With photo-quality resolution of 270ppi (pixels per inch), you can identify any necessary focus or exposure corrections at the time of capture, rather than discovering them when you transfer your images to your PC.
The A900 features an impressive design befitting a premium flagship model. The simple form eschews ornamentation and exudes competence, while the iconic pentaprism design element conveys superior optical performance. The A900 also incorporates a distinctive cinnabar-colored ring circling the lens mount – a design element shared across every Sony® α; (alpha) DSLR camera.
Changing lenses in a DSLR can allow dust to enter the camera -- so to help keep the CMOS imager cleaner for better pictures, the Sony® α; (alpha) DSLR-A900 utilizes both static-free anti-dust coating on the imager's filter and anti-dust vibration that automatically shakes the sensor to dislodge dust each time the camera is shut off.
The A900 features a dual card slots and accepts both CompactFlash® and Memory Stick Duo™ Media (sold separately).
Analog-to-digital signal conversion is performed by the full frame Exmor™ CMOS image sensor.
Updated Image Data Converter SR3 software4 improves your workflow with faster RAW file processing and improved image correction.
The A900 includes a built-in eyepiece shutter which can be shut to help shield against entering light and prevent exposure errors.
Mirror Lockup Mode raises the main mirror before exposure to reduce vibration at shutter release, resulting in better performance during long exposure shots of fireworks, stars, etc.
The Image Data Lightbox software4 included with your Sony® α; (alpha) DSLR helps you browse, rate, and compare your images, making it easier to select your favorites for further processing.
Concentrate on your shooting and make adjustments on the fly thanks to convenient button placement. The ISO and White Balance adjustment buttons are located on the top of the camera body near the shutter button for easy thumb operation.
Building on years of expertise, Sony has developed the world’s first body-integrated image stabilization solution for a full frame DSLR1. The SteadyShot INSIDE™ in-camera image stabilizer actually shifts the image sensor to compensate for camera shake without sacrificing image quality. The compensation effect is equal to as many as four shutter speed steps, giving you more creative freedom when shooting in low light. And, because it is integrated into the camera body, SteadyShot INSIDE technology works with all compatible α (alpha) system lenses.
The Intelligent Preview function allows you to see the effects of manual adjustments to exposure value, shutter speed, aperture, Dynamic Range Optimizer and White Balance before you take the shot, so you can determine the optimum settings before you take the shot, instead of losing time to trial-and-error.
A high-performance autofocus system uses 9 focus points (center dual-cross type) and 10 assist points to deliver fast and precise focusing.
Sealed viewfinder optics and rubber gasket surrounds on all buttons, dials, and switches help resist the entry of dust and moisture into the camera, and allow for safe use in a wide range of environments.
The shutter mechanism in the A900 is designed to achieve shutter speeds up to 1/8000 seconds and proven for 100,000 cycle operation.
To recover details in dark or bright areas of the image, the A900 provides multiple levels of Dynamic Range Optimization: Standard mode, to improve shadow detail using standard gamma curves; Advanced Auto mode, allowing you to select any of 5 DRO correction levels, or DRO Advanced Bracketing, which automatically takes three shots at different DRO levels with a single shutter press.
The autofocus system in the A900 features a highly accurate F2.8 sensor for improved focus precision when using lenses faster than F2.8.
Viewfinder magnification of 0.74x lets you see your subjects nearer to actual size.
User-replaceable focusing screens for shooting specific subject types can be purchased as optional accessories.
Sony drew upon its extensive experience designing and building heavy professional broadcasting camcorders to develop a rubberized grip that allows you to hold the A900 with comfort and confidence.
Sony® Picture Motion Browser (PMB) software4 provides a simple and intuitive way to sort and archive your image collection, as well as perform common editing operations and output to data disc or the Web.

Pros: High Reliability, Great Design and performance
Cons: None
The A900 Flagship camera is at the top of my list on cameras I have used over the years. Excellent design and reliability, Sony has certainly hit the mark. Despite what many Canon and Nikon camera users are saying, this camera ranks right up there with both of them and in some ways out performs several cameras I've used in the past from Canon and Nikon.

Pros: build
Cons: High grain past ISO 200, Auto Focus Issues, and use the feature's
I just bought this off a friend that did not like it, were both pro photographer's and I hate to say it, but I had to sell it to another person. Build quality is about the best thing going, but who cares if you can't shoot over ISO 200 without heavy grain. The metering is not quite there and the auto focus is very fubbly or inconsistant. The sony Raw file format is very hard to work with.

Pros: Image Stabilization
Cons: Frames per Second
Still one of the Hotties; Image Quality with good glass is astounding. The good glass is expensive. Faster shooting would help in sports shooting, but 5 fps is no slouch.

Pros: Profesional features

I originally bought the A100 several years ago. Next I upgraded to the A700 as soon as it came out. Both cameras fit my needs at the time and performed excellently. I purchased the A900 in September of 2009 along with the grip and two lenses, Ziess 16-35mm f/2.8 and Zeiss 24-70mm f/2.8. I also grabbed the HVL-58 Flash. This camera has been a dream to use. I?m old school so I don?t miss the liveview and I didn?t want video. If I want to take movies I?ll get one of Sony?s very fine HD movie cameras. I love that this feels and acts like a real professional still camera. I have used this camera in the -10 degree snow covered canyons of Utah and the very humid marshes of Florida without any issues. As everyone already noted, the viewfinder is awesome. The controls are well placed and the grip is very well designed. Some folks say the camera is a bit heavy. Most cameras reaching the pro level are heavy. That is why specialty straps are available to get the weight off your neck. If the camera was any lighter folks would complain that it feels like a toy. I myself love the heft of the camera. It feels durable and ready to go out and experience the ever changing environment of the real world. I?m one who goes off the beaten path to get pictures of things many folks would otherwise never see and I need a camera that?s ready when I get there. Not enough lenses? How many do you need? With 3 of the lenses in my small collection I have a range of 16mm-200mm at f/2.8. When I use the 2x Teleconverter with the 70-200 G SSM I have a high quality 140-400mm f/5.6 lens. I?m set for everything from landscape to nature photography. I do agree that I?d like to see a 24 or 28mm tilt-shift lens for architecture. Sony and Zeiss offer what I consider the best prime lenses available for those really low light occasions and I will eventually pick up one of those. The 24.6MP Full Frame sensor is wonderful. I love the rich details available in my images. Some folks like all the pixels for the cropping ability. I however, love to use all the pixels. I fill the entire viewfinder when shooting. I love seeing my images printed very large so all the details captured with this camera are visible. Customers appreciate the details as well. I also really like the depth of field control one gets with the full frame. Is this camera perfect for everyone? Nope. But it does fit me at the time. Any improvements I?d suggest? Maybe a bit better High ISO performance and add selectable autofocus points closer to the rule-of-thirds points in the viewfinder. Otherwise I?m very satisfied with this camera.
