The ultra-compact DCR-SX40 Handycam® camcorder can record video to 4GB of embedded memory or handy removable Memory Stick Duo™ or Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media. A professional-quality Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens delivers sharp, high resolution images and its 60x optical zoom lets you bring the action closer with impeccable detail.
4GB embedded memory:
4GB1 of embedded memory can record and store up to approximately 2 hours 55 minutes of video footage (LP mode).
Hybrid Recording to 4GB1 memory or Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media (sold separately):
Hybrid recording technology delivers a new level of flexibility of capturing and transferring your video footage and digital photos from the camcorder to compatible viewing devices. Record to 4GB1 embedded flash memory or choose instead to record to removable Memory Stick PRO Duo™ media (sold separately). You can even select from various dubbing functions to easily copy video or still images from the embedded flash media to theMemory Stick PRO Duo™ media media -- without using a PC.
2.7” wide touch panel3 LCD display (123k pixels):
The 2.7" wide touch panel3 LCD display provides exceptional viewing clarity with 123K pixels resolution. The display rotates up to 270 degrees for multiple viewing angles, as well as provides sharp, detailed images for monitoring or playback. The convenient touch panel allows easy access to menus and additional functionality such as spot focus and spot metering.
Includes Sony® PMB (Picture Motion Browser) software:
Sony Picture Motion Browser software offers a simple, intuitive way to transfer, sort, and view your video and still images on your compatible PC. In addition, multiple output options let you burn your memories to DVD (sold separately), as well as take advantage of one click upload to a number of popular video and photo sharing sites9 .
Film Roll Index:
Like chapters in a book, Film Roll Index helps you easily find desired scenes in video footage. When using this feature, the camcorder previews the beginning of scenes and can create scene indexes set at specified display intervals (3, 6, or 12 seconds and 1 or 5 minutes).
Professional-quality Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® Lens:
The Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens is designed specifically for compact camcorders, and utilizes precision ground optics to maintain the sharpness and contrast found in larger lenses.
Direct connection to DVD burner (sold separately):
The DCR-SX40 supports a direct connection to the VRD-P1 DVD burner (sold separately), which allows you to burn DVDs directly from your camcorder without the need for a PC. And because the VRD-P1 is powered by your camcorder, you don't need an additional AC power cable.
Built-in zoom microphone:
The built-in zoom microphone focuses audio recording on your subjects with the camera's zoom lens, helping memories ring true with clear dialogue and crisp, discrete sounds.
Easy Handycam® Button:
Using a camcorder can be intimidating for some people. With a press of the Easy Handycam Button, most of the advanced features of the camcorder are "locked out," letting you focus only the buttons essential for recording.
USB 2.0 interface:
A USB 2.0 interface provides an easy way to connect your camcorder to a compatible PC for fast transfer of video and still images for editing.
60X Optical / 2000X Digital Zoom:
Ideal for sporting events, wildlife, or distance shooting, 60X optical zoom brings you closer to the action, so you can capture extremely tight shots, even from far away. Awesome
Pros: compact, easy image/video mode, easy upload, zoom and quality is excellent
Cons: not in HD
Got this on the 4th of July and brought it to my fam's trip to DC, NY, NJ, MD, VA& PA this month too. It sure captured alot of moments. I plan to change the battery so it can record longer. I like how you can upload, edit and burn it to a cd really easily

Cannot Wait to Return
Cons: Terrible picture quality, Inability to improve picture quality
I am so disappointed with this camera. I was looking forward to a camera for family trips and hikes and such. The ability to take stills was the selling factor for us but the pictures are HORRIBLE! They are such poor quality and there is no way to improve them. I cannot wait to return this camera. I expect better from a company like Sony, even in this price point.

Nice for 250 Bucks
Pros: Intuitive
Cons: Not HD
Just got it and in 15 minutes was in control. I look forward to some good vid's with the inexpensiveness of this nice LITTTLE camcorder.

A Litte Confusing
Pros: great 16:9 video, zoom it good, fits perfectly on youtube, good internal memory
Cons: touchscreen lcd could break, digital zoom sucks
the camera takes great videos and the menus are a little confusing because you have to go through a bunch of menus just to delete a video, the touch screen lcd is pretty cool because you dont have to press a bunch of buttons but im afraid i might break it so id have to warn you to be a Little easy on the screen, another problem it the memory stick, it only takes memory sticks and i thought it wold come in handy because i have a 2GB in my PSP but i dont have enough room so im just using the internal memory which is great because its 4GB so overall i think this camera is pretty awesome

My mother just bought me this handycam for my trip to Italy and France. I cant wait till i can use it on my trip. I have used it for little movies here and there and it works great! I rarely have to use my memory stick.
- 4GB equals 4 billion bytes, a portion of which is used for system management and/or application files. Available capacity is approximately 3.833GB.
- Viewable area measured diagonally.
- Requires Microsoft Windows XP SP3/ Windows Vista SP1. Not supported by Mac OS.
- 12. One Touch Disc Burn feature requires DVDirect burner or compatible PC with supplied PMB software (sold separately).
