After a thorough look at the cameras available in this price range, I decided to wait for the release of the DSC-HX5/V because nothing else compared to it for value. I have been using the DSC-HX5/V now for about three weeks. The cons above are minor compared to the plethora of features that are available on this camera. I can honestly say that this is one of the best purchasing decisions I have made. My favorite features are the fast wide angle G series lens, sweep panorama mode, HD video capability and compact size. Based upon battery life I think an 8 gig memory stick is a good choice. You will not be disappointed if you purchase the DSC-HX5/V.

Pros: panoramic shots, iauto, sleek look, quality feel, 10x zoom
Cons: price tag
I have always been one to buy "last years model" simply because I don't want to pay for the latest and greatest products. But after searching for an hx1, and coming up empty handed, i decided to pay the extra money and bought this model. After using the camera, I knew it was an excellent choice. The panoramic shots are extremely easy to take. The 10x zoom is a nice feature, and especially because it can be used while taking video. Picking the right setting is easy with the on screen description of each. And for the even more advanced photographers, there are plenty of settings to give you manual control. The IAuto setting makes everything simple for those who don't want to get technical with the scene selectors, but for those who like to have control, they are there when you need them. This camera is great for the all levels of photographers. Oh ya, and it takes AMAZING photographs. But that should be a given with a Sony!

Pros: Ease of use; terrific pic and video quality
Cons: not much internal memory
I can only say that, as a die hard Leica film camera guy, this little unit is pretty amazing. For most shots, all one need do is point and shoot. The results are nothing short of superb. The effects of the camera's noise reduction in terms of revealing less detail than one might want can be somewhat mitigated by using the unsharp mask in your photo software. But as far as being able to take no-brainer great pics and videos, this camera rocks. For everyday use, this camera holds its own quite well, using just the "Intelligent Auto Program" mode, which selects the parameters needed for a great shot, given the conditions. Most folks who simply want to grab the camera and capture the moment would find it difficult not to take a great, well balanced shot using "Intelligent Auto Program" mode. One more thing: I first looked at the Sony DSC-TX7 and was similarly impressed with the quality of pics it snapped. However, after actually holding it in my hand and trying to snap a pic, I found that it was so small that I had trouble doing so comfortably. Plus, its touch screen, which occupies the entire back of the camera, holds all of the controls, making it very awkward to operate. IMHO, the DSC-HX5V beats it hands down for ergonomics, plus it has a 10x optical zoom vs. the 4x of the TX7. And GPS, to boot! The only comparative disadvantage will be when zooming while shooting video, as the HX5V will record the noise of the lens zooming, while with the TX7, there is no such noise due to its different construction. Just buy the DSC-HX5V. You can't go wrong.

Pros: panarama, video, burst mode.
Cons: pictures do not flip in view mode. GPS does not always sync.
I wanted a camera that shot hd video and saw that this one was coming out so I waited 2 months for it. It was well worth the wait. We got it in time for our fourth child to be born and the pics and videos are amazing. I have not yet been able to watch the videos thru the HDMI, but on the computer it has surpassed my expectations. Only downer on the video is the quality of the audio. Which is not a deal breaker. Battery life is short compared to my canon elph that broke (no fault to my own). So an additional battery is wise especially if you are shooting a lot of video. I love this camera and have no regrets!!!

Pros: Just about everything
Cons: Not enough picture formats, like 3:2
I'm finally upgrading from a Sony S40 (really old, but works fine) to this Sony HX5v. This camera works great. Up to 1080i in a camera this small at this price, how could you not get one? I've only had this camera for 4 days now, the greatest part about it is that it can use SDHC or Pro Duo memory cards. Also unlike my old camera you can zoom in while shooting video's. I connected this up to my HDTV, and there is video on the camera and the TV, However the words on the TV are really hard to read, but you can always read it on the camera. On other notes, while spinning around in circles and while shaking the camera, it still takes great pictures. The start up time it faster than my S40, but it takes a long time to turn off.
