    The hard drive is where permanent data is stored--applications, documents, all your permanent information. Although disks may be used to store info, they are backups, with the hard drive as the primary storage area. This is different from RAM, which loses its memory when the computer is shut off, and starts anew the next time the computer starts.
    
    Recent computers come with very large hard drives, with the capacity measured in gigabytes. The larger the hard drive, the more data that can be stored - keep in mind that pictures and videos take up a surprisingly large amount of hard drive space.
    
    The number of "rpm"s (or revolutions per minute) dictate how fast your hard drive can spin. Higher rpm means faster read and write times, which mean faster performance in moving files and general system performance.
